BECOME A MEMBER OF THE SPIRIT CATHOLIC RADIO FAMILY!

We need your continued support to proclaim the Gospel message.

The Campaign for Catholic Radio began in the summer of 2009 and over$900,000 was pledged. Combined with funds raised since then, donations to the campaign have exceeded $1.4 million bringing us closer to our $2 million goal.

Through God's grace, Spirit Catholic Radio has reached more people during 2009 than it ever has in its 11-year history. With a more powerful signal and the prayers and support from so many people like you, more than 1.1 million potential listeners in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa can now tune in and listen to Spirit 102.7 FM KVSS!  We also saw people in the Grand Island area raise funds to bring SPirit 91.5 FM on the air just before Christmas!

This momentum built and guided by the Holy Spirit, continues to grow as opportunities arise that will enable other communities outside the current coverage area to experience Spirit Catholic Radio. To forward that spirit of evangelization effectively, it's important that steps are taken to ensure future generations will have the benefit of this apostolate, and that community awareness increases along with quality programming.  To do all that, we're requesting your help.

Please prayerfully consider adding your support to help reclaim the culture.

In fact, you can show your support now by completing the on-line pledge form here.  Your support will play a key role in meeting our campaign goal.  Remember, your participation in the Campaign for Catholic Radio will enable KVSS to continue its ongoing mission of Bringing Christ to People and People to Christ.

May God richly bless you and your family.  Please feel free to make a pledge online or call the main line at 402-571-0200 if you have any questions.

Yours in Christ,
Jim Carroll
Executive Director

"The words which you transmit reach countless people, some of whom are alone and for whom your word comes as a consoling gift, some of whom are curious and are intrigued by what they hear, some of whom never attend church because they belong to different religions or to no religion at all, and others still who have never heard the name of Jesus Christ, yet through your [radio] service, first come to hear the words of salvation."

MESSAGE OF POPE BENEDICT XVI
THE IDENTITY AND MISSION OF
CATHOLIC RADIO TODAY
SYMPOSIUM - VATICAN CITY

Why Catholic Radio?

Catholic radio possesses a unique ability to touch hearts and heal souls. It is at the cutting edge of a nationwide movement to Reclaim the Culture, and the moral and spiritual underpinnings of our society. It is a strong, reassuring voice of the faith-filled Catholic laity, working in partnership with leaders in the Church.

Much of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa is now blessed to be able to listen to Spirit Catholic Radio - KVSS, Veni, Sancte Spiritus - Come, Holy Spirit!  Founded and run by lay men and women who have answered the call to bring Christ to people and people to Christ, the station first went on the air with a small signal in January, 1999. From that humble beginning and through God's grace, Spirit 102.7 FM now reaches nearly 1.2 million potential listeners with a 50,000 watt signal.

Offering perhaps the closest equivalent today to what Jesus was able to do with large groups through his preaching, Spirit Catholic Radio is able to broadcast the life-changing message of the Gospel, to proclaim Catholic Church teachings, and provide a fresh moral perspective on critical issues and events. It counters the shallow assumptions of the secular media and touches people one-to-one, making a difference in individual's lives.

"Your station has literally changed my life."

That is why it is so important to support this Campaign for Catholic Radio - Reclaiming the Culture - enabling Spirit 102.7 FM to fulfill its mission.

Why is Spirit Catholic Radio so effective?

  • Available - All can listen in their homes, cars or on the Internet, regardless of socio-economic conditions (no subscription or service contracts) or religious affiliation. Through Spirit Catholic Radio, God's WORD is shared 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  •  Personal - Spirit Catholic Radio touches people personally. It enables the listener to mentally reflect with the speaker in the privacy and solitude of a listener's home, office or car.
  •  Varied - In addition to local programming from the Omaha, Lincoln and Iowa, Spirit Catholic Radio  uses several Catholic resources throughout the country to bring the best mix of quality programming.
  •  Uniting -It promotes unity by highlighting what is happening within the local Church of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
  •  Cost effective - Compared to other communication media, radio reaches more people, in less time, for less money, with less staff, and with greater effect.

"But how shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?  And how can they believe unless they have heard of Him?"  Romans 10:14

WHAT YOUR DONATION WILL ACCOMPLISH

Growth in Broadcast Signal

Ten years ago, KVSS went on the air in Omaha on 88.9 FM with a 60-ft. telephone pole and a very weak 500 watt signal. Nearly a decade later, the Holy Spirit offered the station a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reach many more people with the purchase of a powerful 50,000 watt signal priced significantly below market value. After joining forces with a group of lay people working to bring Catholic radio to the Lincoln Diocese, more than two million dollars was raised in 90 days to sign a purchase agreement. Following FCC approval, Spirit 102.7 FM went on the air in 2009 as the second largest Catholic radio signal in the U.S., broadcasting to nearly 1.2 million people in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa!*

That spirit of evangelization continues to grow at Spirit Catholic Radio, with plans to offer even more people the opportunity to hear the Good News with expansion of programming into Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, North Platte, Hartington, and O'Neill, Nebraska. Those communities will fully fund the equipment expense and provide financial support to KVSS, while station operations will be leveraged to provide programming at a fraction of the cost of starting a new station. Part of the proceeds from this campaign will be used as seed money to help with the expansion.

Financial Security

Spirit 102.7 FM - KVSS is completely listener-supported, receives no funding from either diocese and has no annual deficit.  Funding for the station comes from contributions from people like you who wish to share in the mission of promoting the WORD OF GOD on the airwaves. Without the generous support of our listeners, the station would cease to exist.

It currently costs about $90,000 a month to operate the station. An additional $2 million over three years will allow Spirit Catholic Radio to reach its potential and accomplish its missionary goals. It will also help to ensure KVSS will be around for the next generation, and continue to be a model for Catholic Radio across the U.S.

Quality of Programming

KVSS strives for the best in programming and production quality to inspire, inform, and teach. Because we are competing for people's time, programs need to be relevant to today, therefore we need to produce programs that not only meet that challenge, but also deliver an exceptional message. By promoting parish life and the sacraments in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, Spirit Catholic Radio gives listeners a sense of ownership in this apostolate. Local news, weather, and sports enhance the program line-up that also includes a variety of the best in Catholic music.

Community Awareness

In the Gospel of Luke, we are told that no one who lights a lamp hides it away, but rather places it on a lamp-stand so that those who enter might see the light. To enable more people to discover the light of our faith though Spirit 102.7 FM, it is vital to promote the radio station. This includes billboards, yard signs, direct mail, creation and distribution of program guides and informational materials, bumper stickers, e-mail, newsletters, being visible at parish and diocesan events, and effective use of the website (www.kvss.com), which enables listeners from around the world to hear the Gospel message.

* 88.9 FM has been sold to a Christian group, and as of July no longer broadcast Catholic radio. New equipment installed this summer on a tower near Gretna, Nebraska, has enable 102.7 FM to broadcast to all areas.
